Erie Canalway's Syracuse & Central New York

Valid Through: October, based on availability

The Salt City of Syracuse is aptly named because it provided 80% of the world's salt in the 1860's. This salt was moved west and east along the Erie Canal, right through the center of the city. That section of canal was long since filled in and renamed Erie Boulevard... but the only original Erie Canal Weigh Lock Building is now the Erie Canal Museum. There is also the Onondaga County Salt Museum resting near Onondaga Lake where salt water bubbled to the surface and was boiled or evaporated away until only salt was left behind. The museum has an excellent interpretation on how this very difficult job was accomplished. To the east in Chittenango, along the banks of the original Erie is the excellent restoration and repair service docking where canal boats were removed from the water and cleaned and/or refurbished during the late 1800's. Take the short drive along Cazenovia Lake to the village of Cazenovia for a leisurely walk through town and then a stop at "Lorenzo", original home of John Lincklaen, who was land purveyor during the middle to late 1700's. The last morning has time for great shopping at the famous Carousel Center with its 200 stores overlooking Onondaga Lake.
